Tesla's latest Full Self-Driving (FSD) update, version 14.1.7, is rolling out to employees and early access testers, and the initial impressions are overwhelmingly positive. Elon Musk has called it a "massive leap" in capability, and for once, the hyperbole might be justified.
The most noticeable improvement is in how the car handles complex intersections. Previous versions would often hesitate or creep forward tentatively. V14.1.7 commits to turns with a confidence that feels much more human-like.
"It just went," said one beta tester. "No stutter, no waiting for a gap that was already there. It just flowed into traffic."
While it's too early to declare victory, reports of phantom braking—where the car slows down for no apparent reason—are significantly down. The new neural net architecture seems to have a better understanding of shadows and overpasses, which were common triggers for false positives.
